⚠️ Essential Trip Requirements
a). Driver's License: You MUST have an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued from your home country, along with your valid domestic license.
b). ETC Card: Japan’s expressways are almost entirely cashless. Ask your rental car company for an ETC Card (Electronic Toll Collection). It allows you to pass through tolls automatically and often gives you discounts.
c). One-Way Rental Fee: Renting a car in Tokyo and returning it in Sapporo will incur a "One-Way Drop-off Fee." This is often very expensive (can be ¥30,000+). Always verify this cost with your rental agency.
d). Winter Warning: If traveling between December and March, do not attempt this unless you are highly experienced in deep snow and ice driving. If you are not, stick to flying or using the Shinkansen.
