Japan Rental Drive
๐ธ Springย
( March to May)ย
This is the best time for a road trip, thanks to the beautiful weather and breathtaking cherry blossoms. Make sure to book your rental car early on Klook, as vehicles tend to sell out incredibly fast during this peak season.ย
โ๏ธ Summerย
(June to August)ย
The weather is hot, and sudden heavy downpours or typhoons (Rainy Season) are common. Drive carefully on slippery roads, and make sure the windshield wipers on your Klook rental car are in perfect working condition before you head out.ย
๐ Autumn
(September to November)ย
Perfect for travelers who love mountain views and vibrant autumn foliage. Just keep in mind: it gets dark much earlier in Japan during autumnโoften by 4:30 PMโso it is best to avoid driving through mountain passes at night.ย
โ๏ธ Winter
(December to February)ย
Driving can be extremely dangerous due to ice and snow on the roads. If you are heading to snowy regions like Mt. Fuji or Hokkaido, it is absolutely mandatory to add Snow Tires to your Klook car rental for your own safety.ย
If you are planning to rent a car and drive in Japan, you cannot use your local driver's license alone. Depending on your home country, you will need to prepare specific documents before you arrive.
Here is the complete guide to knowing if your license is valid for driving in Japan as a tourist:
Tourists from these countries MUST obtain a physical International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home country before flying to Japan.
โ ๏ธ Important: Japan only recognizes IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. IDPs under the 1968 Vienna Convention (which is common in European countries) are strictly NOT accepted by Japanese rental car companies.
Asia & Oceania: Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos.
North & South America: United States of America (USA), Canada, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.
Europe, Middle East, & Africa: United Kingdom (UK), Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, UAE.
Tourists from these specific countries do not need an IDP. However, they are strictly required to present their Original Local Driver's License PLUS an Official Japanese Translation issued by the JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) or their respective embassy in Japan.
There are only 7 countries/territories under this special agreement:
Taiwan
Switzerland
Germany
France
Belgium
Monaco
Slovenia
Note: Self-made translations or translations using apps (like Google Translate) are NOT accepted.
If your home country is not listed in any of the categories above (for example: Mainland China, Brazil, or Indonesia), you cannot legally drive in Japan as a tourist, even if you hold an international permit from those nations. To drive, you would need to obtain a permanent Japanese Driver's License.

Smart Travel Strategy: Train + Car Rental Comboย
Traveling between major regions (like Tokyo to Osaka) is fastest and most comfortable via the Shinkansen (Bullet Train). You don't need to stress yourself driving for 5 to 6 hours on the highway!
The smartest strategy is to take the bullet train to your main destination or regional hub, and then rent a car right outside the train station to explore the rural areas, scenic mountains, and hidden spots.
