Japan Rental Drive
If you hold a driver's license from Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Slovenia, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Japan. Instead, you are legally required to present your original driver's license along with an Official Japanese Translation issued by the JAF (Japan Automobile Federation).
To help you prepare for your trip, here is the complete, hassle-free guide to applying for your JAF translation online.
Before opening the application page, make sure you have the following ready on your phone or computer:
Clear Photos/Scans of your Driverβs License: You need high-quality images of both the front and back of your official home-country license.
For Taiwanese Licenses: A clear copy of your official "Driver's License Record Certificate" (if applicable).
A Valid Credit Card: To pay the processing fee online.
An Email Address: To receive your application status and the final digital certificate link.
Step 1: Access the Official Portal
Go to the official JAF online portal. You can access the direct application link here: π Β https://english.jaf.or.jp/driving-in-japan/drive-in-japan Scroll down the page and click on the "Online Application Service" Β button.
Step 2: Create a Temporary Account / Register Your Email
Click on "Apply Online".
Enter your active email address.
Check your email inbox for a confirmation link sent by JAF. Click that link to continue your application.
Step 3: Fill Out the Applicant Information
Carefully type in your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport and driver's license:
Full Name
Date of Birth
Nationality
Address during your stay in Japan (You can use your first hotel's name and address).
Step 4: Upload Your License Images
Upload the image of the front side of your license.
Upload the image of the back side of your license.
Make sure the text is readable, there is no glare from lights, and the edges of the card are not cut off.
Step 5: Pay the Processing Fee
The official fee for a JAF translation is Β₯4,000 per license.
Enter your credit card or debit card details to complete the payment securely.
Note: Once the process begins, this fee is non-refundable.
Step 6: Wait for Issuance (Around 1 to 3 Business Days)
JAF will review your application.
Processing usually takes 1 to 3 business days (excluding weekends and Japanese public holidays).
Keep an eye on your email for a notification saying "Your Japanese Translation is Ready."
Once approved, you will receive an email containing a Web Code and a link. You do not need to visit a JAF office in Japan! You can easily print it at any local Japanese convenience store.
Locate a Convenience Store: When you arrive in Japan, find a 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, or Lawson.
Go to the Multi-Function Printer: Every convenience store has a large printing/copying machine.
Select Print Service: Choose the "Content Print" or "Network Print" option on the touch screen (the language can be changed to English).
Enter Your Code: Type in the Web Code provided in your JAF email.
Print: Pay the small printing fee (around Β₯20 coins) and the machine will print your official, certified Japanese Translation sheet!
Bring the Original: The JAF translation sheet is NOT a substitute for your real license. When renting a car, you must present BOTH your original physical home-country driver's license and the JAF printed translation.
Validity: The translation is valid for as long as your home-country driver's license remains valid, but you can only use it to drive in Japan for up to one (1) year from the date of your entry into the country.
